There is something in the air of Bollywood that is becoming hard to ignore these days.
Is it a plane? No!
Is it a bird? No!
It is the yesteryear superstar!
On the telly and on the screen, they are marking their presence by signalling something of a second springtime of their greasepaint lives.
And it doesn't get any better than this. Vinod Khanna, Dharmendra, Feroz Khan, Jeetendra... it definitely is the second springtime of their reel lives.
And all this just for the Constant Movie Fan. For
Vinod Khanna, it's the telly for starters. And Channel 9X and
Smriti Irani. When she conceptualised the "mega" serial
Mere Apne, she said that there was no one more suitable to portray the 'family stalwart" than Vinod Khanna in the family saga than spans generations.
The flamboyant Feroz Khan, after a decade of staying away from the Bollywood star-lit highway, came back with
Janasheen in 2003, followed by
Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena,
Cash and now the season's release,
Welcome,
which is on its way to becoming a huge commercial success along with Aamir's
Taarey Zameen Par.And he's slated to portray Sir Judah in Sir Himesh's
Karzzz (I hope I got the spelling right!), reprising the arch-villain's role that
Premnath made famous in the original
Om Shanthi Om blockbuster.
Jeetendra (our one and only
Jumping Jack) came to the telly as the judge in
Jhalak Dikhla Ja, and showed them young ones that the King of Shimmies still hasn't lost his shine through the passing years. And now with Ektaa Kapoor lording over her "aangan" in Tellyville and son Tushaar Kapoor, an established face in Bollywood, maybe it's time for Pap to get down and show them a thing or two about how those famous pair of
White Shoes tapped their way into the hearts of many an Indian heart worldwide.
And
Dharmendra is back in the limelight with his home production, proving that the rugged charm still hasn't worn out out and, in fact, has only increased in appeal with the passing years. With two projects on the anvil,
Halla Bol and
Mr.Natwarlal 2,
Dharmendra is set to prove that he hasn't lost any of that
garam that had accompanied his love affair with Indian cinema that has lasted five decades and is still going strong.
For that matter, even Rajesh Khanna is set to star in his own reality show on TV.
All one can say is, let it rock.
Let it roll.
And keep them coming.
