The proverbial "manure" hit the fan yesterday. A young and highly talented ad-jingles composer just decided that he has had enough with someone rehashing and recycling his compositions and wanted an end to it.. Not that this was something new in Bollywood..
Ram Sampath, all of 29 years old, decided to take on The Roshans ,(Rajesh and Rakesh) for shamelessly lifting his jingle for Sony Ericsson and reworking it into its two songs (and one has been remixed again!).
Hrithik Roshan, is known to have a had a lengthy discussion with Ram Sampath, requesting him "not to stress Roshan Sr at this point of time and to leave it at that."
That part really did me in while reading the morning daily. I rolled over laughing.
Stories of "inspirations" are legion right from the Black & White era of Bollywood.
Our Exalted Directors are used to helping themselves generously to tunes, lyrics, visuals, dialogues and when all this gets a little too tiresome, copying the movie verbatim to Indian sensibilities . Not that anyone minds it these days.
What one cannot stomach is the holier-than-thou attitude and feigned surprise when someone catches them with irrefutable proof. The last in the series was SHAURYA a pale imitation of A FEW GOOD MEN.
And that isn't a week old!
Anyways, Ram Sampath had asked for TWO CRORES as compensation for blatantly copying his creation without his permission in KRAZZY 4 and as latest reports go, they have agreed for an out of court settlement.
Well, we know what that means, don't we?
It isn't that Rajesh Roshan isn't capable enough of composing a groovy floor buster to make your fingers go tapping and your legs stand up and dancing if he sets his mind to it. If you don't believe it my dear fellow Constant Movie Fan,dust up that DVD of Hrithik's debut movie (KNPH)and fast forward to any song. There!
So, it's not a question of a lack of talent. It's mostly got to do with conveniently and shamelessly riding on what's trendy and the flavor of the times, and maybe cock a snook at the watching public, leaning on the money pile that you have a-plenty.
In the end,Ram Sampath got his Two Crore (on a generous estimate), KRAZZY 4 gets released with the two songs in the Sound track, and everybody is happy.
I wonder what HOWARD ZEIFF would say to his 1989 release movie, DREAM TEAM being lifted verbatim and christened KRAZZY 4 in its 2008 avatar, in a faraway Nation called INDIA by a Director called Jaideep Sen.
I hope and pray UNIVERSAL doesn't come and stress out Papa Roshan with another insane demand and an astronomical amount as compensation.
But what takes the cake is Director Jaideep Sen's reaction to this whole "unnecessary and unpleasant turn of events"..According to him, "Two creative minds at a time can always think alike. If he had any objection he would have raised it earlier "!!!
Point taken, Jaideep Sen.
Maybe we could extend the same line of argument to the story too.
Maybe it is just possible that two Directors, one, a Master of generic Comedy called Howard Zeiff and a certain Jaideep Sen in India had the same idea 20 years apart on two ends of the Earth.
It just maybe possible.
Krazzy, but possible.
Yeah, why not?
TAILPIECE: If this helps in anyway in clinching your argument, dear Jaideep Sen,someone in Kerala already beat you to it with a
Malayalam version of
The Dream Team in 1991 called
MOOKKILLA RAJYATHU.Surprising, dont you think?Going by your line of argument, here we have,
three people with exactly the same idea, separated by a decade.
Krazzy,dont you think?
